Have you ever been frantically getting ready in the morning to unexpectedly find your bottle of mousse, face cleanser or hair texturizer empty? Well, in the April issue of FitnessMagazine, I stumbled across a few quick solutions for when you run out of your favorite beauty product and are in a crunch.
Out of mousse…go with shaving Cream According to David John, a stylist at John Frieda salon in Los Angeles, the foam has the same frothy texture as mousse and leaves hair soft and voluminous. Put a golf-ball-size blob of shaving cream on your hand and comb it through damp hair with your fingers before blow drying.
Out of face cleanser…go with plain yogurt According to Mary Lupo, a dermatologist in New Orleans, yogurt is packed with lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid that’s a gentle exfoliant and moisturizer. Apply a spoonful of plain yogurt to your skin and rinse it off with warm water.
Out of hair texturizer…go with deodorant According to David Babaii, a renowned celebrity hairstylist in Los Angeles who launched a haircare line David Babii for Wildaid with actress Kate Hudson, stick antiperspirant adds definition to the hair because of its pliable, tacky feel. Smear a few strokes of deodorant onto your palms and rub your hands through your layers and ends.
And the winner selected at random is… Alix, who wrote “B.” Congrats to our winner and thanks to the few who entered! Please note: This giveaway is now closed to further entries.

The mascara definitely lives up to its promise of volumizing each and every lash. It thickens and separates each lash and doesn’t clump or smudge. I also really like that it washes away with only water, making it quick and easy for me to prepare my face for bed at night. Available in four shades and waterproof, this mascara is very affordable (approx. $7) – even priced lower than some other drugstore mascaras.
Not to mention, this mascara has won the Editor’s Choice Award by Allure Magazine and, according to the April 2010 issue of the magazine, is the #1 mascara launch in recent history.* It was also was voted Best of BellaSugar in 2009.
After wearing it for at least a month now, I’d say it’s definitely one of the best drugstore mascaras I’ve used and even out performs some of the other high-end mascara brands I’ve tried. It has clearly become a drugstore favorite since its launch in 2007. Do you have a favorite drugstore mascara?

According to an article in the Huffington Post, plastic surgery is on the rise in Iraq. Nose jobs, Botox and other cosmetic procedures are attracting the attention of many women. One woman in particular says she’s silently getting a nose job to appease the mother of the man she’s hoping to marry. Dr. Abbas al-Sahan, one of Baghdad’s premier plastic surgeons, says he averages about 20 cosmetic surgeries a week. In the past, reconstructive surgeries on war-wounded patients accounted for the majority of his business, but more recently, it’s cosmetic procedures unrelated to the war keeping him busy.
Although interest in plastic surgery has grown, the availability of cosmetic surgery is limited. According to al-Sahan, there are fewer than half a dozen cosmetic surgeons operating in the country. Not to mention, patients must source their own Botox or silicone. Botox can be purchased from many local pharmacies, but silicone often has to be imported from abroad.
Despite the limited availability of plastic surgery, and that patients are required to source their own Botox and silicone, there’s money to be made in cosmetic surgeries. Patients pay cash for cosmetic procedures – approximately $600 for a nose job and $1,200 for breast implants.
Heidi Montag, a Colorado native and known for her role in the MTV series “The Hills,” appeared as a guest on Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show” Friday, talking about her recent spoof video “Say No to Plastic” for Funny or Die (check it out here) as well as her new role in Ron Howard’s upcoming comedy “Just Go With It,” starring Jennifer Aniston, Adam Sandler and Nicole Kidman. Really? Now she’s landing movie gigs?
For those who’ve been in the dark or haven’t seen the February issue of People Magazine, Montag (age 23) recently underwent ten plastic surgery procedures in one day. Interestingly enough, she told Leno on Friday that she’s not addicted to plastic surgery since an addiction “is something you do every day.” When asked by Leno if there’s anything else she would change, she said, “I would get [my breasts] bigger, but I legally can’t right now.” Apparently, there’s a 800 cc limit, and she’s had 700. Leno also asked if it’s painful, in which she responded, “It’s excruciating, but beauty is pain. That’s what they say.”
I couldn’t disagree more with the girl. Beauty shouldn’t be painful, nor is she a good example of beauty. The Heidi Montag from Crested Butte, CO, prior to the Hollywood scene, was much more beautiful. Check out the interview below (and her risque dress that she designed just for Jay). Warning: This interview is somewhat painful to watch.
Late Saturday evening, I stopped by Urban Outfitters (in Denver) on my way home from a friend’s house (after watching Kansas lose to Northern Iowa in the NCAA tournament!) to find that Urban had cute boots on sale for only $29.99. After only briefly digging through a massive pile of sale shoes (see photo), I unburied the below pair of cute tall suede boots from Kimchi Blue, which I thought would be of interest to those ladies still looking to grab a pair of tall suede boots this season.
Exclusive to Urban Outfitters, this suede boot has a high-stacked 3″ heel, buckle strap at the top and a cushioned footbed. They’re on sale from $100 to $29.99 (in stores only) and are available in grey (see below), chocolate brown, khaki and black. I also found this boot online at UrbanOutfitters.com, but online it’s $49.99 and only available in chocolate. This boot fits perfectly around the calf – not too tight or too loose. So if you’re still looking to snag a pair of tall suede boots to wear with skinny jeans or dresses this season, you may want drop by your local Urban Outfitters and take a peak. Although I found boots in sizes 6, 7, 8 and 10, sizes are limited.
Now’s the time to dig up those ol’ formal dresses collecting dust in your closet and put them to good use. Saks Fifth Avenue has partnered with DonateMyDress.org, a national campaign designed to collect prom and special occasion dresses from around the country to donate to girls who can’t afford the costs of going to their prom, sweet 16 or other formal dance.
Now through March 31, Saks Fifth Avenue is collecting formal dresses in its stores nationwide. The dresses will be donated to underprivileged girls to wear to prom through local dress drive chapters of DonateMyDress.org. Besides knowing you’ve helped a young girl, there’s also something in it for you. When you donate a gently worn special occasion dress, you’ll get 20% off a new evening or party dress for yourself (or for your sister or daughter who might need a new prom dress this year).
If you live in Denver, take your dress to the Saks Fifth Avenue in Cherry Creek and ask for fellow StyleVise member Jenee Rick in evening wear. She’ll take good care of you. All dresses collected at the Saks Fifth Avenue in Denver will be donated to ARC Thrift Stores.
Offer details: 20% offer valid on full-priced merchandise only when you donate a gently worn special occasion dress. One per customer. Cannot be combined with any other offer. Not valid on Saks.com. Select styles only. See an associate for details. No adjustments to prior purchases.

Let’s face it, aging is a natural process, and it isn’t exactly something we look forward to. Thanks to dermatologists Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields, below are a few proactive measures you can take to help keep your skin looking youthful.
Rollover onto your back
Do you sleep on your side or stomach? Over time, pillow creases can become permanently tattooed into your skin. Train yourself to get off your side and sleep on your back, so you don’t advance wrinkles while getting your beauty rest.
Kick the smoking habit to the curb
Smoking can result in sagging, dull and course skin as it breaks down collagen, impairs wound healing and restricts blood vessels.
Skip the straw
This one is a biggie for me as I prefer drinking most beverages from a straw. However, I wasn’t aware that the puckering associated with drinking from a straw can cause increased wrinkling around the lips.
Wear some shades
No matter if it’s gloomy outside, sunglasses are a must everyday. It’s your best defense against crow’s feet. Many also suggest using an eye cream after age 20.
And of course, slather on sunscreen!
Wear sunscreen daily (no matter the weather). And make sure your sunscreen shields against UVA and UVB rays.
A Florida woman, Megan Barnes, wasn’t driving while intoxicated, on her cell phone or texting. Nope. She was driving while shaving her bikini area. Allegedly, she was on her way to visit her boyfriend. She must have been in dire need of some “landscaping.” With her ex-husband steering the car from the passenger seat (which is even more odd), she crashed into the back of a pickup truck.
Barnes was already driving with a suspended license, just one day after she was convicted of driving under the influence. She had been ordered to impound her car, her license was revoked for five years, and she had been placed on probation for nine months. Thankfully, nobody was hurt. Although, it’s possible she may have some razor burn. Ladies, please refrain from taming your mane in the car.
