Aging by Numbers: Interesting Facts from Allure Magazine

April 6, 2010 Leave a comment

Gold Makeup MirrorThe April issue of Allure shares interesting tidbits about aging in its “Beauty by Numbers” section of the magazine. Below are a few of the facts I found most interesting.

1965: The term “midlife crisis” was coined by 48-year-old Canadian psychoanalyst Elliott Jaques.

42: Percentage of American women age 35 to 64 who said in 2006 that they had never used and did not plan to use anti-aging skin products.

28: Age at which Cindy Crawford began seeing a dermatologist for anti-aging treatments. By the way, Cindy Crawford has her own anti-aging skincare line Meaningful Beauty, launched in conjunction with her dermatologist Dr. jean -Louis Sebagh, one of Europe’s premier cosmetic doctors.

80: Percentage of aging process attributed to lifestyle after age 50; the other 20 percent due to genetics, according to chief wellness officer at the Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Institute.

2008: Year the New York Times reported that red wine might slow aging, since the resveratol in the wine slowed the age process in mice. For those unfamiliar with resveratol, according to the New York Times, it is “a chemical found in the skin of grapes and in red wine that has long been conjectured to be a partial explanation for the French paradox, the puzzling fact that people can enjoy a high-fat diet yet suffer less heart disease than Americans.” Click here to read more.

25: Age at which a person’s short-term memory slowly begins to weaken.

2010: Year a skin dye called My New Pink Button was marketed to women whose labia had darkened with age. Really? My New Pink Button is described on its website as “a simple to use genital cosmetic colorant that restores the “pink” back to a woman’s genitals.”

252: Average times per week women ages 35 to 69 felt anxiety over aging, according to a 2009 British survey.

Plastic Surgery Blossoms in Iraq and Only a Handful of Surgeons Operate

March 23, 2010 Leave a comment

Iraqi WomanAccording to an article in the Huffington Post, plastic surgery is on the rise in Iraq. Nose jobs, Botox and other cosmetic procedures are attracting the attention of many women. One woman in particular says she’s silently getting a nose job to appease the mother of the man she’s hoping to marry. Dr. Abbas al-Sahan, one of Baghdad’s premier plastic surgeons, says he averages about 20 cosmetic surgeries a week. In the past, reconstructive surgeries on war-wounded patients accounted for the majority of his business, but more recently, it’s cosmetic procedures unrelated to the war keeping him busy.

Although interest in plastic surgery has grown, the availability of cosmetic surgery is limited. According to al-Sahan, there are fewer than half a dozen cosmetic surgeons operating in the country. Not to mention, patients must source their own Botox or silicone. Botox can be purchased from many local pharmacies, but silicone often has to be imported from abroad.

Despite the limited availability of plastic surgery, and that patients are required to source their own Botox and silicone, there’s money to be made in cosmetic surgeries. Patients pay cash for cosmetic procedures – approximately $600 for a nose job and $1,200 for breast implants.

Heidi Montag Flaunts “Her Girls” Wearing Risque Dress on Jay Leno

March 22, 2010 2 comments

Heidi Montag, a Colorado native and known for her role in the MTV series “The Hills,” appeared as a guest on Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show” Friday, talking about her recent spoof video “Say No to Plastic” for Funny or Die (check it out here) as well as her new role in Ron Howard’s upcoming comedy “Just Go With It,” starring Jennifer Aniston, Adam Sandler and Nicole Kidman. Really? Now she’s landing movie gigs?

Heidi Montag on the Cover of February 2010 People MagazineFor those who’ve been in the dark or haven’t seen the February issue of People Magazine, Montag (age 23) recently underwent ten plastic surgery procedures in one day. Interestingly enough, she told Leno on Friday that she’s not addicted to plastic surgery since an addiction “is something you do every day.” When asked by Leno if there’s anything else she would change, she said, “I would get [my breasts] bigger, but I legally can’t right now.” Apparently, there’s a 800 cc limit, and she’s had 700. Leno also asked if it’s painful, in which she responded, “It’s excruciating, but beauty is pain. That’s what they say.”

I couldn’t disagree more with the girl. Beauty shouldn’t be painful, nor is she a good example of beauty. The Heidi Montag from Crested Butte, CO, prior to the Hollywood scene, was much more beautiful. Check out the interview below (and her risque dress that she designed just for Jay). Warning: This interview is somewhat painful to watch.

Donate a Dress and Get Something New at Saks Fifth Avenue

March 15, 2010 Leave a comment

Now’s the time to dig up those ol’ formal dresses collecting dust in your closet and put them to good use. Saks Fifth Avenue has partnered with DonateMyDress.org, a national campaign designed to collect prom and special occasion dresses from around the country to donate to girls who can’t afford the costs of going to their prom, sweet 16 or other formal dance.

Girl Shopping for Formal Dresses

Now through March 31, Saks Fifth Avenue is collecting formal dresses in its stores nationwide. The dresses will be donated to underprivileged girls to wear to prom through local dress drive chapters of DonateMyDress.org. Besides knowing you’ve helped a young girl, there’s also something in it for you. When you donate a gently worn special occasion dress, you’ll get 20% off a new evening or party dress for yourself (or for your sister or daughter who might need a new prom dress this year).

If you live in Denver, take your dress to the Saks Fifth Avenue in Cherry Creek and ask for fellow StyleVise member Jenee Rick in evening wear. She’ll take good care of you. All dresses collected at the Saks Fifth Avenue in Denver will be donated to ARC Thrift Stores.

Offer details: 20% offer valid on full-priced merchandise only when you donate a gently worn special occasion dress. One per customer. Cannot be combined with any other offer. Not valid on Saks.com. Select styles only. See an associate for details. No adjustments to prior purchases.

Woman Grooms Bikini Area While Driving and Crashes

March 9, 2010 Leave a comment

Photo of Women Who Crashed Car While Shaving Bikini AreaA Florida woman, Megan Barnes, wasn’t driving while intoxicated, on her cell phone or texting. Nope. She was driving while shaving her bikini area. Allegedly, she was on her way to visit her boyfriend. She must have been in dire need of some “landscaping.” With her ex-husband steering the car from the passenger seat (which is even more odd), she crashed into the back of a pickup truck.

Barnes was already driving with a suspended license, just one day after she was convicted of driving under the influence. She had been ordered to impound her car, her license was revoked for five years, and she had been placed on probation for nine months. Thankfully, nobody was hurt. Although, it’s possible she may have some razor burn. Ladies, please refrain from taming your mane in the car.

Payless Shoes To Launch Beauty Line in September

March 8, 2010 Leave a comment

Payless ShoeSource LogoPayless ShoeSource plans to launch a line of 60 beauty and body products in 1,500 of its 4,500 stores in September 2010. The retailer has partnered with a beauty company (Maesa Group) to develop products under two existing brand names already sold in Payless stores: Zoe and Zac (eco-friendly shoes and accessories) and Unforgettable Moments (a collection of dyeable bridal shoes).

The line will consist of lotions, creams, butters, shower gels, fragrances, nail polish and lip and eye colors, starting at $2.99. The company decided to launch a beauty line after a successful expansion of its accessories line in 2009 (i.e. sunglasses, hats, hand bags and scarves).

I’m curious as to how this new beauty line will differ from the many other discount lines currently sold in drugstores. For some reason, Wet n Wild immediately comes to mind when I think of this new beauty line offered by Payless. What are your thoughts? Would you buy makeup at Payless?
